Hardly daring to breath, he kept still and through a crack in the venshi he could see the light at the entrance. With a fearful sound of hydraulics, the monster moved toward the doorway. Eugene watched petrified as it walked to the exit. With its almost limitless strength it pushed the door open enough to pass through.
With the sudden fear of being sealed in, he leapt to his feet and rushed out of the building and into the darkness of the night. As he dashed through the vestibule, he saw both Jym and the Torbral. Once outside and a fair distance from the building, he huddled under his venshi, trembling.
There was little chance that the Torbral would kill him. It wanted something that only a living Eugene could offer. After what seemed like hours he was satisfied that the thing had either gone or was waiting for him. The fire in the vestibule was out and the whole world was in darkness.
A thousand fear-filled moments passed. Great streaks of blood red lit the sky from the rising sun. At last morning was approaching. Eugene felt painfully stiff. His legs cramped and his fingers frozen in position. Still there was no movement from the direction of the great old building.
